The 2026–2027 school year marks the 15th anniversary of the founding of Margarita Muñiz Academy (MMA). This milestone provides an important opportunity to celebrate the school's history, recognize the accomplishments of our students, families, educators, alumni, and community partners, and reaffirm our commitment to the future of bilingual and dual-language education.
Named in honor of Margarita Muñiz, a courageous, passionate, and highly respected bilingual educator and principal, Margarita Muñiz Academy was founded on the belief that students whose first language is not English deserve equitable access to a high-quality education that honors their language, culture, identity, and lived experiences. Margarita Muñiz was a tireless advocate for the educational rights of Latino students and multilingual learners, informed in part by her own experiences.
Fifteen years later, her vision continues to guide our work.
Margarita Muñiz Academy is dedicated to developing full cultural and linguistic fluency in Spanish and English for all students. Through strong partnerships with families and the broader community, the Academy prepares young people for higher education, meaningful careers, and civic leadership. Our students and families remain at the heart of our mission and are the inspiration for our continued work.
MMA holds a unique place in the educational landscape as Boston's public dual-language high school, and the only public dual-language high school in New England. Students experience language learning in both English and Spanish as a means of exploring identity, perspective, history, culture, and social justice. Our collective work is grounded in the shared values of diversity, inclusion, community, citizenship, scholarship, and creativity.
At Margarita Muñiz Academy, students are surrounded by bilingual educators and support staff who are committed to meeting students where they are and helping them reach their full potential. Teachers, counselors, social workers, coaches, and other school professionals work collaboratively to ensure that students have the academic, social, emotional, and community supports necessary to overcome challenges and achieve their goals.
As we celebrate this important 15-year milestone, we also recognize that there is much more work to be done. Many of the students and families we serve continue to experience challenges associated with poverty, including food insecurity, housing instability, mental health concerns, and other barriers that can significantly affect educational outcomes. Celebrating our accomplishments must therefore also serve as a call to action: to increase awareness, strengthen partnerships, and mobilize resources to address the needs of our students and families.
To commemorate this milestone and broaden awareness of the Academy's mission and impact, Margarita Muñiz Academy is planning a series of events throughout the 2026–2027 school year:
I. Kick-Off Celebration

The anniversary year will begin with a celebration bringing together students, families, faculty, staff, alumni, and community partners to honor the Academy's history and celebrate the people who have contributed to its success.
